Well, at least Tim Burton is a more modern movie-related reference than Nosferatu and Barbarella.

In yesterday’s strip, Prof. Zebu wrote on the board that the students should “Take your portfolios – and be your art!” Luann and Jock are admiring their art, and Emo is living his. He seems to have come closest to taking Zebu’s lessons to heart.

Emu is doing what Zebu did when he shredded Luann’s art project, or perhaps what Duchamp did when he exhibited Fountain at the art exhibit in 1917. By throwing away his portfolio, he’s making a statement. Consider it an act of “performance art”.

Jocko shows surprising appreciation for art today! Luann, on the other hand, is merely reactive. Emo is posturing more than thinking.Who would have guessed that Jocko would seem to be the smartest of the trio today?!

“I think it was Ann Eiffel, rather than Crystal.”_____________________________________

Not exactly, JP. I believe Ann Eiffel (Who SHOULD be Re-Introduced Back in THIS Strip as a PERMANENT Villain, by the Way) was Fired from Borderland Books long before the Bernice/Zane/Crystal thing started heating up. Remember the scene at the Book Store where Crystal introduced Herself to Gunther as “Zane’s soon to be Girlfriend?” Or SOMETHING Like THAT…..,

Back years ago, okay decades ago, i took a class on perception, basically on how the brain and vision interact, with emphases including some hugely fun illusion foci. If you shadow it enough, compared to nearby areas, white will look black. Similarly, black can be made to look white, or shades of gray by using careful lighting. More recently, but before my vision was as it is now, i saw an oil painting that was entirely black, but TEXTURED. By using lighting and varying that lighting in intensity and in direction the painting which appeared to just be black at first then became multiple images.

To the poster who thought Tim Burton had not done anything good in a long while, here are his fine projects, including a just announced new Bettlejuice and the recent Alice through the Looking Glass. Wow, woukd it be fun to see the storyboards for those! http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000318/I do not know why his filmography URL at IMBD does not include his name.A totally animated feature film, though, by definition due to the tasks involved does take a very long while. We know three people in that industry and even with a large team 3 years is pretty standard but 8 is not unusual, and that is dedicated work.

8This is very nice…. I like learning more about Emo (“Emory”). I like that he is planning to become an artist, too. That should be enjoyable and fun… and I hope he is kept with the comic for many years. I tend, myself, to share Jock’s (“Jacques”) sentiments though, and hate to see art thrown out… even it is meant to be a “statement”.In regards to Emo’s wishing to be like Tim Burton….. here is my opinion about Tim Burton:I have enjoyed several of the stories of his films. I think he is a very good story teller. However, I personally am not fond at all with his “technique” of making most his movies VISIBLY dark (meaning, low, low lighting). I do not mind “dark” as in brooding or emotionally dark….. I am very specifically referring to the LACK OF LIGHT in much of the images he films. For me, the visible darkness of the scenes detracts from the film… makes it a challenge to see details sometimes. And, to me, it seems like a cop-out to make filming of the details less strenuous for the film maker more than an “artistic” statement.Again, do not get me wrong…. “dark” as in emotionally dark or brooding…. NO PROBLEM. “Dark” as in filming with a deficit of lighting….. to me… IMO…. a negative.

Emo, if you want to make it really dark, cut off your ear and then shoot yourself. You’ll immediately become world famous, your art will be worth a fortune, and you’ll be very…dead? Oops! Back to the drawing board.

This goes back to one of yesterday’s topics. Today in his EXCELLENT speech – not to be missed – President Obama mentioned that decreasing the funding for terrorism would help, and i had been thinking yesterday about the phrase, “Think globally, act locally.” Well, according to the UN and BBC the two largest sources of funding for the Taliban are opium and Lapis Lazuli. Lapis also helps fund ISIS since the Afghan mines were taken over by a war lord in a different recent report.I craft (using touch along w my better eye now) and am glad to say that i have been using up old stores of lapis so have not recent bought that, but for anyone here who beads or who makes jewelry, and anyone considering buying a lapis lazuli product: consider going to an alternative blue stone like howliteLapis Lazuli is now the second largest source of income for the Taliban after opium per the UN and BBC. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-36424018 http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-36457132

In my humble opinion I feel Luann is one of the best strips…often I find some daily offerings that speak volumes…like Monday 6/13 when the kid trashes his “art” after the phony instructor goes thru his sel indulgent lip service…..

If there were seeds there then a further bombing would just cause more poppy seed germination. Poppy seeds remain viable for a great many decades. I recall an article by a horticulturist who moved into an old farm house and put in a stone pathway with neighboring gardens. The person was able to confirm w the family which had been there before that it was probably something like 70 years since it had last had a garden. The area – even between the sections of stone – erupted in opium poppies. (I can not offhand recall the binomial but it is so ething like Papivar somniferens.)

Jock seems like a caring person despite his stereotypical football player looks. I thought it was a nice gesture that he retrieved Emo’s portfolio and engaged him in some encouraging talk. This seems like an interesting arc… maybe relating to Luann’s journey toward being an artist.

With all due respect to all those commenting, I think I will return to commenting when the events of the last 48 hours are a bit less immediate. It is all people are talking about in the media. I want a break from it,, but this place right now does not offer much. Carry on. but for now I think I will read the strip, and not say anything, unless it is a must. See you on the other side.
