I was married to an accountant for almost 20yrs. I have seen her go toe to toe with an IRS auditor on behalf of a client – and win !
The IRS doesn’t like to lose, much less be called to task for sloppy auditing and investigative work. On the other hand, they delight in finding fault with improperly filed or fraudulent returns.This happens, more often than you’d think when people use unqualified tax preparers – many working for large, advertised companies like H and Whatever Around the Block.
I can’t tell you the number of people over the years who got screwed trying to save a few buck by going to one of these outfits or ( worse ) doing their own taxes. My wife and her associates in the CPA firm, made lots of money correcting the errors.
Even though I live in a foreign country now, and am retired, I still retain a professional accounting firm to handle my U.S. taxes and finances. They are worth far more than the pittance II have to pay them. Force of habit, I still save all my receipts !
I’ve never had a bad experience with the IRS. I’ve made errors and the IRS simply pointed out my goof and on occasion, I paid a minor fine. I’ve never been threatened.

As a former NYS Tax Auditor I can tell you that wouldn’t work. We would tell them to put them in order or they would all be disallowed.
