I love Verne, but he is incorrect. A predicate nominative of the verb to be requires a nominative pronoun. You are he is correct. You are him is very much incorrect. Now you see why I feel such a kinship with Verne.

Actually, “Tag! You’re he!” IS correct, in the same way that “It is I” is correct. The verb “To be” (is, am, are, etc.) does not work the same way as, say, “To tag”.

In context, “it” is a noun, not a pronoun. Sorry to poop on the grammar party.

I came here just to point out that it’s a predicate nominative so “he” is correct, and was relieved to see several people got there first!

Come on, folks, be honest. When someone asks you “Who’s there?” are you gonna say “It is I” or are you gonna say “It’s me”? Be honest now.

As English evolves, the tendency is for the nominative in the predicate to change to objective (actually the dative after English lost the separate accusative).

My third grade teacher would have rapped my knuckles with a ruler if I had suggested that dialect can overcome logic. No matter how many times I say “it’s me,” it will not be correct, no matter how much my ear prefers it. In order to fully evolve into correctness, the practice will need to overcome the logical problem of giving an intransitive verb an object.
