The explosion takes only a few minutes. The remnant can be seen for a billion years or so. Our solar system (including us) exists only because a supernova exploded about 8 billion years ago and created the atoms in us (the iron in our blood, the calcium in our bones, and everything within several billion miles of here).
But I stand corrected. See Universetoday.com. (How quickly does a supernova …) The core collapses in less than a second, the shockwave rebounds in hours, and peak brightness is reached in a couple of months.
And I find it totally amazing and awe inspiring that God created all of this in 6 days, and started the process of evolution at the time of creation. What an awesome God!!
A 13.8 billion year old universe with a thousand million million million suns in it (more or less) is a truly awesome Creation. Nevertheless, I worry whether God or anyone else will save us from ourselves if we go on messing up what God has entrusted us with in “our” part of the cosmos.
I swear I actually saw one in June of 2006, but I’ve never been able to find someone else who saw it. Kinda like when you’re playing billiards by yourself and sink the eightball on the break, or playing a practice round at golf and hit a hole-in-one. The flare-out lasted about 5 seconds, and I saw no more light from that area of the sky afterwards.
Love the science here. Reminds me when I was in HS History class. Teacher asked about latest discovery of ancient humans. I answered zinjanthropus boisei. She asked had I read that in the NY Times. I said no, Alley Oop. Honest, it was in the strip that morning and I figured since the name was so weird it must be real. I got a laff from the class and she looked daggers at me, but I was right, so she couldn’t do anything, LOL!
Meanwhile as you are all discussing the actual science and math behind Wiz’s comment, we are completely over looking the face Blanch has hot pockets!! Who knew those things had been around that long?? :-)
