    The BMI, Body Mass Index, was created by Aldophe Quetelet. He was a Belgium Astronomer, not a medical man, in the decade before the Civil War based on what he thought we should look like 160 years ago. Why is this still a thing?

    rather than launching drone attacks on enemies of the state, why not give them the american diet. the diet rich in fats, oils, sugar, salt, processes, etc…they will either die from obesity related ailments, develop chronic ailments(diabetes, high cholestrol, etc…) that need daily medication, or, spend significant time, energy, and money to become healthy.

    @Wiley Miller

    It’s not meat and dairy, it’s the over consumption of to much food, and not just food but processed food, it’s to easy to get and most Americans are lazy.

    If a person ate just meat (beef, fowl, fish) and veggies and nothing else they would lose weight.

    An irony may be that one of the leading causes of obesity has been consumption of large quantities of “diet” sodas, and foods with artificial sweeteners! (Leading to a degree to over eating, but also screwed up body chemistry.)

    A balanced diet is simply the best diet for omnivores (check your dentition) in moderation. When I got my weight back down to a reasonable BMI, felt much better and pre-diabetic condition went away! It was also that balanced diet Genetics, thus “body type” and body chemistry also plays a role in determining what is good for the individual, it ain’t all “one size fits all” And yes, most obesity the US is because of malnutrition, not just how much they eat, but WHAT, garbage in, garbage, well, on as well as “out”.

    BMI is a very crude indicator of obesity. It’s a one-size-fits-all body types measurement. It doesn’t account for differences between body type: strong, healthy bones and muscle mass are just as bad as fat. Being tall because you have long legs is just as good as being tall because of a long trunk even though the weight of legs and trunk are different.

    In a related event, I had a friend who went on the Atkin’s diet (remember that? Eat all you want except carbohydrates – so you could down a half dozen Big Macs as long as you didn’t eat the buns). He lost weight and actually weighed a few pounds less than me. However his stomach still hung over his belt whereas mine was firmly tucked in. But the BMI proclaimed him healthier than me.

    According to the BMI, I am borderline overweight, yet I’ve never had a doctor tell me to lose weight. I guess I wear it well.

    I know this is not what Wiley has in mind when he says “plant-based diet,” but I can’t resist noting that refined sugar (cane sugar, fructose and HFCS), which scientists are beginning to think just might be the most health-harming thing we’ve yet put into our bellies, comes from… plants.

    Well, plants and a whole lotta processing…

    and the reason they would lose weight is they would have inadequate nutrition.
