Smart. For some reason those are not popular baby names these days. But they have a long list of choices from scifi, movies, and the comics. “Scotty” might be good… :-)

I would say Spock but the boy won’t be tall and thin. How about Yoda if it’s a boy? Roseann if it’s a girl?

It could be worse; I attended HS with a guy named “Mike Tyson”, and college with guys named “James Bond”, Picard and “James Kirk”. What’s funny is that Kirk is now a Captain in the Navy.

Anyone remember this story? It might be an urban legend, but it might be true. There was a woman in line for “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” who went into what she believed was a false labor. By the time it became apparent it was NOT a false labor, it was too late to get her to the hospital and she gave birth in the theater. If the story is true, there is now a 36-year-old woman walking around with the name “Trekki.”

Worked with a woman who wanted a biblical name for the boy she was expecting. I suggested Pontious. She didn’t talk to me for almost a month. I got a lot done.

In reality, it’s kind pf selfish for parents to name their children in reflection of their own interests. No one can guarantee that their children will share those interests, or values, or be concerned with the same history. Kids are not little xeroxes or clones of their parents. They are individuals. Choose a name for them that will belong to them, not one that’s all about you.

My husband’s name is so common, he wanted uncommon names for our sons. We thought they were unusual at the time, but about 10 years after they were born, their names became popular. (One in the top 20, the other in the top 5.) Still, since they’re older than most kids that share their names, it hasn’t proven to be an issue yet. I do recommend not having a strange spelling for a common name, or a name so odd that no one can pronounce it by just looking at it. Also, not an extremely long name, especially if the surname is long. However, if one has an extremely common last name, it might be best to have a rarely used name for the first name.

I still remember the old Simpsons episode where Homer and Marge discuss naming their first child: “What about Bart?” “Bart? Cart, Dart, Eart… Nope no problems with that one!”

re: unusual at the time, but ….

My daughter’s name was unusual at the time I named her, but when she got to High School there were two others with the same name and one even had the same middle name!! Both were in chorus with her. Haven’t really encountered it much before or since then :o) Weird.
