Did Wizard of Id get a new “artist”? The people are not drawn like they used to be. Very poor drawing to say the least. I use the term “artist” very loosely in this case..

Yes, ‘new’ artist. And there’s nothing “poor” about the drawing, just different. (My opinion, based on hanging out too many years with folks at New Hampshire Institute of Arts.) Actually, his style is almost the same. Remember, Id started back in 1964 with Brant Parker. But he turned over the strip to his son Jeff in 1997 and if you go back to that time, you can see a change in style. In 2007 Mason Mastroianni took over artist’s duties, but I don’t recall an actual style change then, so I’m not sure what “take over” entailed (maybe just inking or the speech balloons?) On the other hand, Jeff Parker definitely handed the job over to Mason last month, about the time we saw the new artist style, so we know someone ‘new’ is doing the basic drawing of the strip. If you really compare the styles from January 2015 and January 2016, the biggest difference is the shape of the noses. Jeff’s noses were more rounded ovals, while Mason’s are somewhat more hook-shaped or sausage-like.

I like it. The characters have way more expression, and the expression matches the action in the panel. The fact that the Wiz always had a goofy smile on his face no matter what was going on was really starting to grate and the humor was juvenile at best. I was very close to dropping the strip.

It is less of a change than 1950s Peanuts to later Peanuts, and the artist didn’t change there.

Snow is great — as long as you don’t have to go anywhere in it.

I love snow – - – - – for about 2 snowfalls than having to shovel, snowblow, de-ice, slip, slide, and start over again is too much for me now. When I was under 30 it was no big deal and winter was great time to have fun. Now the ‘thrill is gone’ because the ‘chill’ premeates everything including the skeletal.

We need more snow in Minnesnowta! Well, not as much as on the East Coast, but more anyway…
