Actually, it’s a running joke in the strip that Roger is terrible at chess and can’t beat anybody in the family. Andy and Paige hate to play with him, because chess bores them and Roger keeps insisting on playing game after game trying to win – which he never does.
The people that annoy me are the ones that come up with “excuses” for why they lost. “I have a cold.” “It’s too noisy in here.” “You play too slow.”And there was one guy that, before smoking indoors was banned, tried putting me off my game by blowing cigarette smoke at me while we played. Boy, I sure enjoyed beating him…

Why does Roger bother playing Jason? He knows he’s the only one in the house that he can’t beat (or tries to get out of it by letting him win).

The only thing worse than a sore loser is a sore winner.

In HS football, that kind of “winner” behavior gets you a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.
