This is the other side of the coin from the discussion, if you could call it that at first, between Luann and Bernice a couple of arcs ago. At first they were talking in the same room, then at each other, then finally with each other about their issues. Here Quill and Gunther are talking “to” each other about the issue between him and Luann and Prudence, the trilogy. Will they discuss the issue between Gunther and Bernice, and possibly Rosa, another trilogy? Ought to be interesting.

While quill has more talent for singing and acting, supposedly, it has been stated and shown that Luann has some talent for set design and the backstage mechanics of theatre. However theatre is not her passion, teaching and being creative with the little kiddies is. She really does need to mature and get more focused on things other than a “relationship with a guy” But then she wouldn’t be our Luann . I still like Lu and Q together, but Lu+ Q+ Pru = whiny chaos.

Gunth has a good, quiet way of cutting through the layers of an issue and getting right to the source. At least, when he’s dealing with other people’s issues. When he’s dealing with his own, I think he still sees the root of the problem, but his brain auto-switches to trying to work out some sort of unsolvable Hodge Conjecture instead, and he ends up needing outside help.

How to “fix” it:-Quill: “Luann, you and I aren’t talking to each other, right?”Luann: “No.”Quill: “We’re not spending time together any more, right?”Luann: “No, we’re not, and that’s what I’ve -”Quill: “And we really don’t have much in common or shared interests, right?”Luann: “Um, maybe not so much, but -”Quill: “We’re not physically intimate with each other, right?”Luann: “Sure, but-”Quill: “So realistically, we actually aren’t boyfriend and girlfriend in any meaningful sense, other than just always saying that we are?”Luann: “Huh? What do you -”Quill: “So let’s just acknowledge what our status really is, namely that we’re just good friends but not all that close, and let’s go on with our lives while maintaining that status.”Luann: “But, but, you’re my boyfriend!!! You’ve always been my -”Quill: “No, I’m not, really, Look, I’ve got a class. Maybe you too need to study some, right? I’ll give you a call, later in the week. But we should just admit how things are, and accept it. Understand? OK. Bye.”Luann: “But Quill…”Quill: “Bye, Yank.”-And the strip moves on, for the better.

@seismic_2 Except pre the trip to NY & Quinn meeting Pru he & Luann did have a lot in common & were physically close even if they weren’t ready to actually have sex. Even in your example conversation the problem of Quinn not actually listening to Luann (or letting her speak at all about their relationship) is still the problem. If Quinn really isn’t romantically interested in Pru & really does want to stay with Luann then he’s going to have to stop talking & start listening. Heck, even if he & Luann break up he’ll still need that particular relationship skill or else Pru will find her life just like Luann’s in more way than one.

Is Team Evans building a set-up for the Luann-Gunther pairing that always seemed to be Greg’s overriding ambition for the characters’ future? I surely hope not, but it’s starting to look as if that’s still the strip’s long-term plan.

They’re way too young to be exclusive as Quill is finding out. They need to circulate and experience other people. If more people did that the divorce rate might be lower.

I had thought that the reason that was given for the strip’s finally letting its characters move from high school to college was for them to meet new people (and thus also presumably engage in new romances). So far, nada. They might as well still be in Mr. Fogarty’s classroom. Can Luann finally meet someone new, in all these classes she complains about (but which we never see her attend) at the junior college?

I really don’t like Quill’s question, “How do I fix it?” In relationships, one doesn’t fix anything. One listens to one’s partner, and tries to understand the feelings involved. So far Quill has a “D” grade in that, as apparently do some commentators, who suggest fixing things with sex. Good luck with that.

Despite Quill’s question (and i know many men who have such conversations, but only some guys who admit to doing so) i still think the relationship is doomed, and that is fine with me.In fact, despite the need to keep character numbers in workable ranges i think this ultimately could be an amicable break-up that resolves into friendship with on and off apoearances by Quill, and to heck w Luannverse tradition.Yes, i, too, want to see Luann having more of an adult life openning up but besides settings like college and work i would love to see her becoming a volunteer, especially w veterans in her own general age bracket who are recovering from hard times. Here is a strange thought: Luann and Quill become friends. Quill either remains a friend with Pru or perhaps tries dating her. Luann moves out of her parents’ home. Pru tries to take her place in the family. This upsets Luann who tries to discuss it w Quill at the same time that Pru is trying to discuss it with him from her vantage-point.The characters are in the grey area between teenhood and adulthood. Kid fixes will not work, but neither has grown enough for full adult fixes. It is an age with a LOT of learning experiences and expansion.

    -Try a younger age

I have to politely disagree here. I wasn’t reading this ‘toon back when Luann was crazy about a guy in high school who ended up moving to Hawaii, but I’ve read enough posts about how she acted then. And I’ve also seen the ‘Luann Againn’ ‘toons when her friend was assigned to work with that guy on a school project, and Luann was jealous.

This time around, I felt like Luann was trying her best to recognize that her parents benefitted from Prudence’s help, so she only once vented to her mother about how much time Prudence got to spend, alone, with Quill.

I honestly hope that this is the end of the Luann and Quill thing, but not because Luann is so immature and Quill is this great godlike guy. They are going in different directions with their lives, so there’s nothing for them to share anymore.

I just hope that by breaking them up, the writers are not intending to put Luann and Gunther together. That would kind of end this ’toon for good…

General observation: People mature in bits and pieces on their own schedules. Luann is much more mature on how to place others first. Quill is much more mature on finding and pursuing career dreams. It is a bad time for this mismatch. Stasis usually does not happen, though we all know people for whom it certainly has. I think people should assume the characters will grow. The journey can be amazing. Down the line each will learn what the other has learned, i hope, and i woukd like to see the characters both do that, but not as a unit.

The whole Quill/Luann issue will get resolved if/when/how the Evanses want it to.Since it’s been popping up periodically for years now, I’m guessing it will continue to pop up and go away, like Brad & Toni’s wedding plans.

To solve any problem, you must first identify the problem and realize it actually does exist..When you have done this, you are nearly finished in your solution..So what is Quil’s problem?.Pru is not a problem. She is a t best a symptom to indicate what it is..Luann is not a problem. Their troubles also indicate what is the problem. Why do they have troubles? Is it because Pru is prettier? Certainly not.. Is it because she is more attuned to what Quil is actually seeking in life?Much closer..
