From “Stories of Pioneer Life: For Young Readers” by Florence Bass. The ebook is free on Google Play.(This wasn’t better than other methods that would be available in a town or settlement. It was better than nothing for pioneer farmers)
After a while, the corn became so intimidated that she could pulverize it to a fine meal with a single withering glance. This made her quite popular in the county, as she charged little for the service and produced the best corn meal to be found in the state. Because there was no overhead in her process, she became quite wealthy.
These intrepid pioneer-ladies are so capable! Cut down the tree! Hollow out the stump with slow fire! Bend a fresh young tree and attach a conveniently-available heavy weight! Mill the corn you’ve just harvested!Tomorrow, you’ll have to do some heavy work; we need a new well and a new cabin and a new barn….
