My son loves chopping onions. We have a closed hand operated dicer. The problem is he often gets a bit overenthusiastic and we end up with onion puree.
Fill a bowl with water deep enough to cover one of your onions, dunk peeled onion under water entirely. Slice and chop Onion under water. No smell, no tears. Job done.
Perhaps it is different w younger people but in my parent’s generation, and to a lesser extent in my generation, men use what is sometimes termed a " polite offer to help" which is supposed to get the equivalent of a pat on the head with no work. Basically, another job for woman since she praises him while continuing to work. In households where that is the norm but it gets violated much grumbling happens after a chore is actually mentioned, unless the job is one that is enjoyed.
Tried the breathe through your mouth thing – it does not work for me. Burning a candle helps a little. Chilling the onions prior also helps but I always forget. I prefer to cut onions myself but it is a challenge. Having a very sharp knife helps.

Chopping onions is one job where the food processor comes out of the closet.

Onions: The bane of the novice. Cut them fast enough and you can avoid the stinging.

Breath through your mouth not your nose when cutting onions and you will have no tears. It is the smell of onions that triggers the tears.
