A kid does not understand 8 hours to go. I’m only semi-a-kid and I do not understand 8 hours to go.

My father used to say, “The longer you keep quiet, the sooner we’ll get there.”

    It worked for a while.

More than eight hours just to get to a cabin? That’s a l-o-n-g time.

The last time my daughter started asking that on a road trip, I just told her “yes”. I didn’t hear the question again although we were on the road for two more hours.

Without the kids, it would probably take 2 hours.

Mom should have brought something for the kids to keep them busy. When we traveled, now not, we had hand held games and extra battaries for our two when they where young. Then they would take napes.

My response always was, “If we were there we wouldn’t still be driving.”

That’s when I started teaching my kids to read maps. (Or at least look at a clock and calculate the time left.) One road trip we put a flat screen monitor in the back where the kids were, so they could watch the GPS screen. (Ours run on a laptop computer.) Of course, I tried to make sure they brought reading materials & toys to pass the time. Now I check an audio book out from the library to make the time pass quicker. They still need something to do with their hands, so if they get too bored they have to take a turn at the wheel. Aaah, the advantages of having kids old enough to drive!

I usually answer the question in terms of a meal, like “we’ll get there after dinner.” Of course, then the next question is “when’s dinner?” LOL Time to learn how to tell time, Michael!

We always left in the middle of the night so daughter would sleep, after stopping for breakfast out would come the games… the license plate game, how many VW bugs, I spy, the ABC game… before she knew it we would be there. Oh, of course on the way to Orlando we added the count the signs for South of the Border LOL

I remember when we learned that crayons are not a good source of entertainment on a long trip, in the summer. ;^(
