I used to have a cairn terrier that would terrify every other dog, and he NEVER even had to bark at them. Most dogs would look at him then turn tail and RUN! It’s not the size of the dog but the size of their heart.
Konrad Lorenz had a tale of two dogs on either side of a fence, whose custom was to bark at each other while running uphill to the end of the fence. One night, the top end of the fence blew down. The two got to the top, looked at each other in horror, and promptly ran back downhill, still barking of course.

We call my youngest son’s dog Little Napoleon because he always wants to take on the bigger dogs.
