A man at a bar has been watching the news with a fifth of whiskey. Reporter: ...and there's talk of a third party. And maybe a fourth. How will voters respond?
If both the existing parties actually worked to solve the important problems like they used to, we would be good. Today they are so polarized all the time an effort and money is spent on ads, smear campaigns and congressional investigations while the county slowly sinks into to the mud of decay.
If we really want more than two parties to have a share in the national discussion, we should change to approval voting, where you can mark your ballot for all of those you agree with. That way, for example, Nader voters would not have been one of the many factors that sank Al Gore in Florida in 2000, while Nader’s true support would have shown in the poll numbers.
As for Huckabee’s recurring bluff about taking the Christian Right out of the Republican Party, or Trump refusing to rule out a third-party bid,
Nothing but silence when I mention proportional voiting to my representatives. (They weren’t millionares before they got in office.) If the SCOTUS wasn’t so political we could sue the parties for their failures to serve the people’s needs.
Last election, when I inquired about how to do a write-in on the electronic forms, I was shown a list of “pre-approved” write-ins indexed by number to select from as the only possible means.
John Oliver put the early hyping of the presidential race in perspective, he said, there are children that will be born before the election whose parents haven’t met yet.
AND feverjr, that is a key problem with our system today. Campaign reform needs to start by banning all campaigning or fundraising prior to six months before a primary election. This continual unending campaign season, is insane! Consider that the sole role of Congresspersons and Senators is to GET ELECTED, NOT GOVERN! They don’t care about actually running a functioning government.
wwwengerRight. Having 80-90% “minority” in three districts while 55-60% “majority” in all the others, is hardly “insuring minority representation”. It is preventing it. Besides, in some states (the more populous ones), all ethnoi are in the minority compared to all others combined.
Yet another poster who has never heard of Bernie Sanders. And here we have FIVE parties in Parliament and yet NOT ONE represents English-speaking liberals (about 40% of the electorate).Not…ONE.

^That’s a significant portion of the electorate on the floor.

Three or four parties is the absolute minimum required for even a semblance of democracy.

So far, the Fifth Party is the only one that’s making any sense.
