My aunt Lella (Mom’s eldest sister and sibling) was 45 when her first grandchild was born; she was 21 when she had cousin Elizabeth who was 23 when she had Adam.

I had a buddy from high school who was older than Nelson, about 12 years old, when his grandmother turned 45. My friend’s mom was 17 when he was born and his grandmother was 16 when his mother was born. They were from a small country town in southeast Texas. I guess they just started young around there.

My great grandmother (from Italy) was 31 when my father was born - her first grandson. She got married at 13 and my grandmother got married at 16.

More recently, my sister turned into a grandmother at 40. She married at 18 and her daughter married at 20. Yikes!

I was 43 when my first grandchild was born and dating a man 8 years younger. DIL wanted to be cute and sent him a Grandfather’s Day Card. I was not amused, nor was he. Obviously, she was too young to have a baby or sense.

Different cultures, different standards…in our society, a pregnant early-teen is a child, unable to be either a functional adult or a parent. In other times and places where they married as young as 13 (okay, still “yikes”), they were young adults: they were expected to function as young adults, and they pretty much did.

Maybe we’re the odd ducks, allowing our young ones to remain infantile for so long. Here’s a thought: maybe we have “juvenile delinquents” only because we allow them to be juveniles when they should have been required to be responsible adults long since.

Speaking of spread out ancestry, my dad was born in 1898 and my mother in 1908. My son is 27, single and no children to speak of.

My mom was 65 when she became a grandma for the first time. I’m the tail end of the family - she was 35 when she had me, and I was 30 when I had my firstborn. My body lets me know I’m not young any more! Just watching my 17 year old son expending his excess energy was exhausting! At least I can still enjoy the antics of youngsters, even if I can’t join in the fun.

Joe, are saying someone can’t be a “good mentor” and also be a “funny character”? I think that is incorrect. You can be both.
