Try the local Doc-in-a-Box instead of the ER. Less wait time, and the doctors are generally very good. Instead of residents, they are mostly retired doctors looking for saner hours. They know their business and sometimes are actually the specialists you need to see.
This joke must have the Aussies scratching their heads. Two of us Yanks were visiting as tourists and needed to see a doctor. We were directed to a local clinic, we each waited less than 20 minutes, were seen, got an antibiotic prescribed, and paid about $60 as I recall.
