    Telling the dog it’s adopted is probably less devastating than telling it it was purchased on the open market for the going rate.

    He wasn’t just adopted, he was chosen. Getting a dog is your only chance to choose a relative, and very few of us would have chosen all the relatives we are stuck with if we’d had a choice.

    I think my dog’s reaction was typical. “Oh boy. Oh goodie, I got peoples. I got peoples. I’m a happy dog. I’m a happy dog.”

    @GretchensMom: I got adopted by a yearling Red Heeler mix. I came home from work and he was living under my porch. RIP Spooky, you’re still a Good Dog.
