@gt58, Pete Rose went to prison for not reporting his earnings on his gambling. The biggest irritant in this entire saga is the fact the many refuse to grasp the fact that betting on baseball is verboten. There are signs in every clubhouse at every level of baseball with that warning.
I’ve always thought that Betting on Yourself should be Legal. So long as the Gambling Itself is legal in the city where the Game is being played, of course..After all, there is no Conflict if you bet you’re going to have the Greatest Game Ever..
As I write this, I am watching a live broadcast from St. Andrews and Phil is currently putting. I scream at the television, " Say it ain’t so,Phil ! Say it ain’t so. "And Phil blows the putt.
To me it boils down to this. If you bet illegally and lose, which eventually you will, these are not just friendly wagers with nice people who will forgive the debt just for the privilege of knowing you. They expect to be paid NOW. If you, then, are in a position to affect the outcome of another sporting event in which they have a vested interest, it is completely within the realm of possibility that they will forcefully encourage you to affect said event in exchange for the forgiveness of some or all of your debt. That is why Rose should remain banned from baseball, and it is why Lefty should be banned from the PGA if in fact he did what has apparently been alleged. How you bet, or who or what you bet on, are irrelevant. Debt to bookie = leverage on competitor.

Apples and horseshoes. Phil was apparently cheating on taxes, while Pete was betting on the same sport he was a manager in.

Why did Fox Sports hire Pete Rose as a commentator? It’s just not right. I have the feeling Mr. Rose still doesn’t believe he did anything wrong.
