The Florida Tar balls are not from the BP oil spill. There is potentially an issue with the oil leak possibly reaching the current that might take it close to Florida, but that has not happened just yet.
I have spent time in California, Texas and in the Gulf of Mexico, both on the beaches and scuba diving….. The beaches and the water were always clean!
Ten years ago, I spent the weekend in Corpus Christi Texas. I had heard there were oil spills there; however the water was clear with at least 4 or 5 feet of visibility. We spent a day, most of it in the water jet skiing and we had NO problems with oil or any other grim/dirt/filth.
hq is beginning to feel like the dipstick in all this…not long ago he claimed this man made accidental volume of oil was a pittance unworthy of any attention. Comparable to the amount that is seeped naturally, day by day.
As the reality of the magnitude of this event set in, he begrudgingly admitted this was not the non event he claimed.
Now the dipstick is poking around for other ways to measure how so much is being made over so little.
It’s the creatures who live in the water that I’m concerned about. From the Christian Science Monitor (posted May 16)
”Gulf oil spill: real disaster might be lurking beneath the surface”
“New research suggests that huge plumes of oil might be spread at all levels of the water column, showing how much scientists don’t yet know about the complex Gulf oil spill.”
“…Moreover, it suggests that serious environmental degradation could take place in the open ocean, creating massive “dead zones” where no creature can live because of the lack of oxygen in the water. The spread of oil at all levels of the Gulf also could become a concern for shore communities in hurricanes, which stir up the water column as they come ashore.”
“Doom and Gloom” is a tool of both sides. Right now the Right is making a bunch of “Doom and Gloom” about ENDA with “transgender teachers” teaching students. They already do. The left is making a big fuss about this oil spill, granted it’s a major problem… I’d like to turn on Rachel Maddow for one night without the majority of the episode being devoted to the oil spill.
There’s cause for concern. And it’s not necessarily the beaches at this point, it’s the dead zones (this was on Maddow last night) that can be caused by the lack of oxygen to the sea floor that these oil plumes can cause. If anything, some comics and media attention to THAT makes more sense than the beaches, which haven’t yet been hit.
Everyone is focusing on FL – LA is the big victim here. Not necessarily in tourism $but in fishing and a MASSIVE and fragile ecosystem unlike almost any other.
I saw the “Oil & Dead Zone” report on last night too. I looked for another source since the “Righties Get So Up Tighty” when MSNBC gets referenced by Liberals.
I agree other topics could be covered more. Too much coverage tends to numb the audience and there is so much happening that gets ignored by the media.
As Brit said, no one is saying that we should just dump oil into the oceans … . Indeed everyone wants to limit such incidents to a minimum,, and considering the fact that there are over 3,800 off-shore wells in the Gulf, and this is the first really major incident, is indicative that the system, while not perfect and in deed of improvement, is otherwise working quite well.
Natural seepage is in fact the major-most contributor of crewed oil to the word’s oceans.
Furthermore, though a natural distillation process - evaporation of the lighter chemical elements, over a short period of time only heavy tar survives, and even that decays over time.
Much of the damage to the tourism has already been inflicted by the over-hyped predictions of doom.
I watched this morning’s TV programs, and they had a difficult time finding any oil - on open see and found some in coastal wetlands, but certainly not anywhere near tourist frequented beeches.
“natural seepage” is a drop, literally in the bucket compared to this spill. Nothing, absolutely NOTHING is positive about this blowout, or the impacts it will have on coastal zones, riparian areas, and the ocean itself, not just the Gulf, but now apparently up the east coast in the Atlantic.
If it leads to increased regulation ENFORCEMENT, and reasonable and fair fees to taxpayers ACTUALLY BEING PAID for resource extraction- something more positive MIGHT come from it. Regulations and inspection procedures have been in place, but not followed, and THAT is what “BushCheneyCo” gave us.
“But are you blond ? And are you chewing Bubblicious and snapping the gum ?”
Unless I’m from Australia [which I’m not] it’s very difficult for a black person to be naturally blonde. I DO want some blonde hair sewn in one of these days though!!
I haven’t had Bubblicious in a long time, but let me tell you… that Trident Layers stuff? It’s fantastic!!

Come on HQ. I know you truly don’t care what happens down here. For a part of the State that relies heavily on tourism this is a disaster.
I was there two weeks ago. Besides hotels, boat rentals, charters, and restaurants, there is nothing else going on out there!

It is quite noticeable on So. Cal beaches.
