Actually, that flag stands for the same thing today as it did in the 1860s – treason against the United States. The symbolism hasn’t changed nor has the mindset of the people waving; it they were traitors then and they are traitors now! Heritage my left foot! it is a blatant symbol of a person’s disrespect for the U.S. Constitution and nothing more!
It’s interesting that the big resurgence of the Confederate Battle Flag came in the late 50s, early 60s. Before that, it had been relegated to museum artifact status, maybe trotted out on occasion for a memorial. When it reemerged, it was during the Civil Rights era, and it was specifically a protest against anti-segregationists. So, regardless of the treason for which it stood previously, in its newer and current incarnation, it clearly stands for contempt for blacks in this country.
The fun thing is that this is the BATTLE flag of the south, not the state flag. General Lee, at Appomattox, surrendered and part of the terms were to cease all resistance and opposition to the north. That certainly includes battle flags, although one could possibly make a case for the civil flag. I’m not inclined to, but it’s possible…

If the confederate flag is just about heritage, then isn’t the nazi flag also just about heritage? I don’t believe that either should be respected.

This cartoon is dead on. It symbolizes treason on behalf of a reprehensible practice of black slavery. No reason to keep it around except in museums.

Did Vlad the Impaler have a flag? If so, I’m sure the Romanians would be proud to display a symbol of their heritage.
