We always had the Sunday Family Fun Day, which usually consisted of going someplace the parents wanted to go to and the kids didn’t: shopping, antique stores, home/boat/RV/hunting/etc. expos, flea market, or random roadside attraction, museum, or church.
That’s what we did, long boring car rides with twangy, mournful country music on the AM radio. At some point Dad would get ticked off and slap us all silly.
We had a ‘56 Ford Fairlane Town Sedan with the Thunderbird V8 and dual exhausts in the rear bumper when I was growing up! I too remember the cigarette smoke, but it didn’t bother me back then.
It was only a couple of years old when it was hit from behind by a drunk driver while parked in South Minneapolis. Dad replaced it with a ’58 Mercury with push button transmission and this was the first car I got to drive…
I think that is a 1955 Ford—the 1956 model had flattened front turn signal whereas the 1955 model had round turn signals. As a kid, I knew those ’50s models intimately but now all the cars look more or less alike to me.

….and gas was $.19 a gallon and traffic was only in downtown. Urban Sprawl and high gas prices have ended that luxury.

We frequently took a drive in the country (a southern expression for “more rural areas”) but it is a tradition I failed to maintain with my family.

That was a familiar car smell to me, the cigarette, not the new car smell.
