The fear. HALT!!!! was the bellow. Is that gum in your mouth! Smith! (not buddies real name) Smith! Smith! is that gum! Then I see him swallow. By this time the corporal is heading straight for us, “if that is gum I had better find some in your mouth or I am going to stick my hand down your throat and find it” I had no gum myself but the corporal was steaming mad, meanwhile Smith is choking up and his throat making all kinds of movements and by the time the corporal was there he had a piece of gum. It was one of those situations where we (the unit) got into less trouble because he produced the gum then if he hadn’t choked it back up.
