Why doesn’t Hobbes have a helmet?

Hobbes should be asking that question of Calvin in the last panel. It would take them much longer to make the map match the yard than it will to do the reverse.

    That’s a Solar Topee, not a helmet

A rough week for Calvin with his parents. Yesterday he went out on a limb to hit his dad with a water balloon. Today he’s digging himself deeper and deeper into a hole.

Except that a pith helmet is not a hardhat. It only protects you from being hit on the head with a sunbeam.

    Reminded me of this paraprosdokian:

To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.

This reminds me of ISO certification. You can either follow the written procedures, or you an write the procedures to conform to what you’re really doing.

On the ‘hole’, Hobbes usually makes a ‘hole’ lot of sense.

Calvin’s helmet will protect his head if a tree drops some pith on him.

@JP Steve: Ziggy’s blue birds never seem to turn out to be the bluebird of happiness.

I was quite struck in university that the map is not the territory. It can’t have that many data points, so it is never accurate per se. Typically the more data points the more accurate your sampling of the territory. Calvin is approaching the concept inside out, turning it upside down. Kind of genius actually, except it may mean he becomes an urban planner or something.
