Years back, the local government in Daytona Beach, Florida decided that the City could no longer “Afford” to Repair and Operate the ancient City Buses that were, quite simply, Falling Apart. So they shut the service down.Within a couple weeks, drivers with Volkswagen Passenger Vans began applying for “Jitney Licenses” and began driving the old bus routes offering rides for 50 Cents to whoever was waiting in the old bus stops.Before long, there were Jitneys all over town, including on routes the buses had Never served..They did so well that, a few years later, the City & County found themselves wanting to go Back into the Public Transportation business.They bought a bunch of new buses, Bought Back all the Jitney Licenses and began running a Much Improved Public Bus service..

Well, its an improvement but it was probably still late and the rate increase takes effect today.
