I’ll never forget the daytrip we took the summer after my freshman year in high school. We took the highway out to the Civil War town of Galena, which was like stepping back 100 years. Then we took the local roads back, down through little old river towns and across to home. And that utterly romantic young man on the slow-moving locomotive who waved to me at the crossing…absolute magic in a single summer’s day.
That can backfire, too. I was returning from the Wisconsin Dells to Chicago one time and took “The Hiawatha Trail” thinking it was a route along Lake Michigan. Finally realized I was wrong when I crossed the border into Iowa. Had a good laugh out of it, though.
Our cars have built in navigation, and once when returning home from Northern Minnesota I decided to change the preferences setting on the Nav to “Shortest Route”.
Wow, I ended up in places I never knew existed! I was so confused, I stopped at a little store and asked how to get to Interstate 94, as I thought I was close.
You try that around here the road may dead end now, or worse, not be there at all. Kinds freaky when a road you once used often suddenly does not exist or even look like it WAS there. Darn developers!

I was following my 90 year old uncle. He has transitioned from the road less traveled to driving through mall parking lots.

I love back roads..I hate that racetrack that is incorrectly named as interstate.

Don’t forget Bobby Troupe’s song, “Route 66” And, the TV show of the same name starring Martin Milner and George Maharus.

Interesting: A cartoonist from Virginia takes a suggestion from Minnesota and places the scene in Pennsylvania; specifically, northwest PA.
