You won’t be so scared as you turn 18 because then you’ll be doing wheelies and stoppies.

So was I on the ice and on the ballet! I was a thick child, too fat for all this and my mother just always wanted me to learn ballet and dancing on the ice. I looked like a fat bear, a horror!!

To view the strip directly, click on the image below or stretch it.In today’s Calvin and Hobbes, the lines next to Calvin’s eyes make him look years older. They give him the look of fear and worry.Charles Schulz used similar facial lines in Peanuts, especially on Charlie Brown’s face. Here is an example where the lines appear next to Charlie Brown’s eyes in the fourth panel:Peanuts (June 28, 1969)

These days, kids are having the same reaction to cars.

Regarding today’s strip. I taught both my daughters how to ride a bike when they were young, taught them both how to drive a car when they got older. Calvin’s dad might be rushing things a bit. He needs to wait until Calvin is ready to tackle life on two wheels. As far as life on 4 wheels, that is something else altogether.

Ah, I’ve never learned to ride a bike or drive a car either. But then – I couldn’t even manage roller skates!

I like to keep my own feet on the ground. Then I know where I am.

At least, Calvin’s Dad was there to help him. My Dad bought me a bike and ‘promptly’ left on a business trip—he was a traveling salesman. I had to teach myself(with some help from my friends) to ride a bike. All he said(when he returned) was ‘good job’ and promptly went into the house for a shot of whiskey ! ! ! !

My dad taught me to ride on a 24", fat tire hand-me-down bike with a metal greyhound on the front fender in our back yard in 1954. He walked along by my side for confidence, then with a little push – I was into the bushes. After several repeats, it was off to everywhere in town. Thanks, Dad. Happy Father’s day a couple of days late.

There is nothing like peer pressure. When all your friends are riding bikes, you figure out how to do it too.

My youngest granddaughter has two older sisters. She learned to ride at 4 and pretty much on her own.

I called a bicycle with training wheels a “tetracycle”. My daughter wanted hers off, so I said that if they came off, they wouldn’t be put back on. She decided not yet. A short time later, she asked for them off and never had any problems.

Is this the same Calvin that goes down an icy-snowy hill at warp speed with Hobbes?

I remember my first bike ride. No training wheels, but my Dad helped me get on and moving. Then I ran into a tree. My Dad gave me advice then that still works today, and with cars too. “If you can’t steer, stop. If you can’t stop, steer.”

The most common thing for a kid to say when learning to ride a bike “Don’t let go, Daddy!”

    This strip is so cute.

How is Calvin’s dad not getting the hint that his son doesn’t want to learn how to ride?
