The Buckets by Greg Cravens for April 16, 2015
Transcript:
Hey! Taxi service for Mr. Bucket. Time to go! The doctor said I should walk... Do I really need the wheelchair? Need? No. But there is a hernia patient being discharged, too. I challenged her to race us. Hahah, on. Are you allowed to be funny? Nope. Not allowed to take the stairs, either. Grab your incisions, dude!

Are wheelies included with the ride?

They still do that? I’ve only stayed at a hospital once, and I hobbled out on crutches the second I heard I could go. Apparently I left a little too quickly because the nurse flagged me down for some pain med scripts while I was waiting in the pharmacy for others to be filled, so maybe a ride would have been included had I waited around. You can’t sleep in a hospital ironically, with the beeping IV machine, nurses coming in every hour to check your vitals, other patients screaming in pain, interns running down the halls, etc., so I wanted to be home as soon as possible.

I’ve been discharged from hospitals several times for anything from out-patient day surgery to full abdominal organ removals. I have been required to ride the chair out for every single one except the full abdominal where they actually wanted me to walk out, accompanied by two nurses, to ensure I was functional enough to recuperate at home. Well, actually a hotel as the hospital was 600 miles from home and it would be another week before I was healed enough to make the travel home.
