The desk actually reminds me of a PhD’s office I saw years ago. There was a small path from the door to the one chair in front of the desk. Every other surface was covered with towers of paper that threatened to topple over with the slightest earth movement. How he ever found anything I’ll never know.

tbree: You probably would have been amazed, because frequently such people know exactly where something is: at least until some gremlin moves it. But that isn’t me…
From somewhere, I downloaded a picture by Howard Pyle of a fellow at an overflowing desk, books and papers everywhere…
At the bottom of it is a quote:
One of the advantages of being disorderly is that one is constantly making exciting discoveries.
Now that’s me!
A. A. Milne
Or how about this:
You can know a person by the kind of desk he keeps. If the president of a company has a clean desk then it must be the executive vice president who is doing all the work.
It’s been my impression through the years that when I come upon a man who has a gleaming, empty, clean desk top, I am dealing with a fellow who is so far removed from the realities of his business that someone else is running it for him.
Dean Koontz long ago said the really great writers he’s known have kept very clean desks. Might explain why all of us are writing here and he’s writing on the best-seller list.
