Employing sophisticated x-ray scanning technology, scientists decipher the ancient, burnt scrolls of Pompeii. Scientist: It says: "The volcano is potentially a threat, but taking evasive action might harm the economy."
I used to be a landlord. I will never do that again.
Regardless, I had a call from my tenant, who happened to be a realtor. She said that the water heater was throwing the circuit breaker. She said that the realty company’s handyman had told her the last time that happened (which I was never informed about) that the next time it could cause a fire.
It did not cause a fire. This does not mean that the situation was not potentially dangerous. This does not mean that I had no responsibility to replace the water heater unless and until a true fire was caused.
“could be” is “not will be”. Science does not perdict the future. It only gives probability. What can be said is the earth is warming and if we continue the ice caps will melt.
Did not. Saying that “it could happen in as little as seven years” is not the same as “They also predicted that the ice caps would be gone by now.” They said that warming was occurring, the ice caps are melting (both true), and IF things go fast enough, they might be gone. They are already shrinking rapidly, enough that the Northwest Passage is open, and the pattern is steadily down. You framed it as “aren’t they stupidly wrong,” when the accurate way to say it was “the range of possibility was as soon as today and as late as much later.” And that’s based on YOUR quotations.
Hi logic. Just chiming in with the observation that, while it helps make us human, the prefrontal cortex seems to serve as managing the executive function, including “logic.” Problem is that the neocortex is kind of weak. That why we have invented technologies to extend its range and capabilities. The problem, it seems, with logic, is that it lacks the integrative capabilities required to proceed the world’s non-linear phenomena. So we do the best we can applying probability theory to enormously complex non-linear problems such as climate change. What probability theory has shown seems to indicate the warming is anthropogenic. While I have no idea what the reality is, the most important thing is adaptability, as you have wisely noted. The realities of our circumstances are that we really don’t “know” about the causality of climate change, but we are making best guesses based on our limited understanding of the probabilities involved. So there’s plenty of room for spirited discussion that persuades no one to change their opinions. My guess is that some of this is willful ignorance, but most is simply self interest, narrowly defined. So, as a species, we won’t take collective action. That’s just the way it is. So adaptation is the key. Not just moving, but adapting to a wide varieties of outcomes. That’s what we do as a reactive species, and that’s what we’ll do here.

The volcano is erupting? This is nothing new. There have always been volcanoes erupting.

Are you implying it is woman caused global warming? Women are trying to get all that back pay they are due?

No, they didn’t.

Understood. Thanks. Now and then I have to temper my words; thanks for the reminder.

Can’t we just throw a few virgins at the problem to appease the God(s) (your preference here).

Looks like the Pompeians were conservatives too. Archaeologists found a stone plak with the inscription “Boehnerius” on it.
