In the case of one house we rented, it was the furnace. A couple we knew in their 70s had lived in it when they were first married. And it was old then.
At the Minuteman Tavern on Battle Green in Lexington, Mass., the docent told us that during the restoration in the 1960s, the restorers scraped off a swatch of the original wallpaper and took it to a wallpaper manufacturer in Rhode Island that had a reputation for replicating antique wallpapers. The service rep looked at the swatch and said “Ah, yes, I think we still have the pattern in the catalog.” They had been producing the pattern since the 1700s and still had it in stock! Now that’s a long production run.
Won’t be able to go back to where we stayed 40 years ago for our honeymoon. My sister loaned us her house for a week, and since has sold it some 15 years ago. Not only that it was the house I grew up in. She bought it from our parents.
