Sorry, but peanuts aren’t good for squirrels. I read that somewhere.Anyway, this guy just wants something to eat! Corn and acorns are good!

Weve always bought sack of windblown hazel nuts from the Backyard Bird Shop.

We buy peanuts in the shell, unsalted, squirrels love them. Even have a peanut feeder and they have to lift the lid and never had to teach them to do that.

This is from the Washington State Cooperative Extension Service:Raw peanuts contain a Trypsin inhibitor that prevents the pancreas from producing Trypsin, an enzyme essential for protein absorption in the intestine, leading to malnutrition. To counter this effect, roast the peanuts in a 300 degree oven for 20 to 30 minutes.Same deal in sweet potatoes and soybeans.

We have a large suet cake feeder cage hanging from a branch and you can buy those special cakes from Wild Birds Unlimited or Walmart. Had to secure the cage as something got it off the branch and opened it up so now it’s up securely and tied down securely until it’s time for a refill and it’s rewarding to watch the birds and squirrels on it. Deer can’t eat it!

We buy Planters unsalted peanuts. The squirrels and chipmunks love them. We also hang those suet bird squares that Capt Kidd mentioned.

What we don’t do is feed ducks or any waterfowl bread. We found out about 15 yrs ago that it swells up in their stomachs and can kill them. It’s what killed several mute swans on the river near my sister in PA according to the wildlife mgt people she talked to.

Tomorrow is Hoppys’ big day! He’s been sleeping since 8:00 this morning just dreaming about it.
