So, now even the Oscars need Affirmative Action to make things fair? What happened to just voting for the best no matter what the color of the person?

We haven’t been asked to do anything about it, there’s nothing we can do about it, it’s been going on forever and we’ve killed off enough of our kids already by intervening in other people’s insoluable problems.

The biggest obstacle to getting help to the region is the Nigerian government. The remoteness of the area (no journos in the region, no confirmation of the numbers of the massacre apart from that for certain “hundreds”), the fact that the Nigerian government has for all intents & purposes lost control of the state of Borno to Boko Haram, the fact that Goodluck Jonathan is campaigning for re-election and this is going to be a serious dent in his reputation (plus the still as yet unrescued Chiboko girls).

Now compare to today’s news of an attack in Cameroon by Boko Haram:Note it as about as remote as Baga, yet Chad managed to send troops to assist Cameroon; Cameroonian army set off in pursuit and engaged with Boko Haram before they crossed the border, managing to rescue 24 of about 80 kidnapped. Why the difference in reaction between Nigeria & Chad/Cameroon?

As for very little in the African press, they indeed have been as slow to respond as the western press. But I have read a lot of criticism against their governments from Africans all over the continent on social media (facebook at any rate). The Nigerian government is loathe to accept any critcism but it’s getting an earful from Niger, Chad and Cameroon. And it has an election to rig run.My Kenyan colleague told me their press is covering it but my Nigerian colleagues were learning more from their Eastern & Southern African colleagues.Western, Eastern & Southern Africans in our work kitchen this morning all agreed: despite talk of Ghana’s president leading an initiative to get the A.U. to organise a force to tackle Boko Haram(note:not Nigeria, but its much smaller neighbour, Ghana), our governments were avoiding taking firm steps so we’re not optimistic. [present were a Ghanaian, a Liberian 2 Kenyans, several Nigerians, 1 from Cote Ivoire, 1 South African, 1 from Zimbabwe and an Algerian. We were told off for being too loud. :-| ]

When Nigerian Christian Militias slaughered nearly 1,000 Muslim women and children, it didn’t get any play here, that was 2003.

While the movie got nominated, the director didn’t. That is NOT that unusual! As I understand it, directors nominate directors, and there’s different criteria, directors do a LOT of things beside telling actors what “X” to stand on. The SCRIPTWRITER has actually more to do with “best movie”, than the director.

I don’t care who wins as long as it’s the BEST, not just who’s what color skin wins.
