Calvin has a magic thermos. The volume of those three snowballs is much greater than the interior volume of his thermos, especially after you subtract all of the space required for the insulating layer.

Calvin is ambidextrous again today. He pounds on the thermos with his left hand but throws the snowball with his right hand. He’s drawn that way so that the reader can easily see what he is doing in each case.

@ Hobbes-the-commenter: Thanks for those! I love that Hobbes-the-tiger uses “momentarily” according to its original meaning of “any moment now” instead of “for a moment.”

Brilliant! Why didn’t I think of this when I was in grade school? All I could come up with was creating a volcano from a half-pint of milk and a straw. Guess you had to be there but as a second-grader, it was top-notch lunchtime entertainment…we couldn’t afford Wayne Newton.

That does it; I’m contacting my Representative to begin a campaign to prohibit the use of this Dihydrogen stuff. I have personally seen what it does to my car, and my garden. Worst of all, it can fall out of the sky, anytime, anywhere, and with little or no warning. Sometimes so much falls from the sky that we have to actually walk through it. It’s as if it’s a part of nature we can’t live without.

This strip reminds me of Bill Cosby’s routine about making a perfect snowball and putting it into the freezer. His plan was to use it to smack someone in July when they’d never expect it. If you don’t know the routine, I won’t tell you the punch line.

As a kid I once stored a snowball in the freezer for a couple of months. It had pretty much shrunk to a ball of ice by then.

Careful, Calvin. Think about that kid who recently got suspended from his school for proclaiming that he had a magic ring from “Lord of the Rings”.

“Does he have another side?”*lWP – Actually I was wondering that this morning. Most little kids have a naughty spirited side, and also a cuddle side when they’re tired and Grandma’s lap is open.*Have we ever seen Calvin in cuddle mode?

Never thought of using a Thermos. A friend of mine used to save snowballs in the freezer for use in July.

Throwing things in school halls can be very dangerous and I will not throw anything while in school — I had to write it 1000 times for playing catch with my papier mache artwork in the hall. (I used carbon).

@neverenoughgold: Just trying to keep up with Bill Watterson and his sabbaticals, taking a break from Calvin and Hobbes. I generally take some time off from GoComics two or three times a year, especially in the spring during Lent.
