By the way Mr. Melcher, way too soon. You wouldn’t have done a cartoon about the Boston Marathon bombing within 24 months of the attack, let alone 24 hours. Just because the attack happened in Paris and victims weren’t Americans does not make it any less tragic or evil.

@leftwingpatriotLaughter was their only weapon… the best way to honnor these men is to go on laughing ! They die for the right of laughing to the face of death and hate. (from France)

Actually, there are no “evils of muhammad and islam”; there are SECTS that have mutilated and bastardized the teachings of Muhammad. Do we throw out all of Christianity because of the Spanish Inquisition and other such atrocities?

This one is exactly the way some aspects of this event should be handled. Hiding and shutting up is exactly what those animals want people to do.

An given what I’ve heard of the victims, they would have satirized the whole thing themselves and gotten a good laugh and a good point out of it too!

Merci! Wolinski and Cabu were some of my favorite cartoonists when I was a teenager. They will be missed. Freedom of expression is critical in this world, even if we don’t like what people say!!

@StCleve72My only answer to you is in form of a question: Would Melcher have made fun of the Boston Marathon bombing less than 24 hours after it happened? The hypocrisy is palpable.

@leftwingpatriotThe runners were not cartoonists, it’s not the same thing. And as kd1sk said those cartoonists WOULD have made fun of it. And Charlie Hebdo WILL make fun of it next week in their next issue. You just don’t get it.

“Rhetoric does not get you anywhere, because Hitler and Mussolini are just as good at rhetoric. But if you can bring these people down with comedy, they stand no chance.” ~Mel Brooks. Lots of funny comments on this one. If they keep us from laughing, then they’ve already won. No one is laughing at the victims here, and the comic is beautifully and tastefully done.

and @Chuck AylworthWhat you say is generally true for most strips, not this one, however. Obviously, you didn’t see the #jesuischarlie above the strip image. It was done yesterday, when he also posted it to his blog (my earlier entry link). I know from experience, Mr. Melcher actually reads comments there.

@TedBlight«tastefully» ? ah, ah! Don’t worry my friend! Charlie has always been famous for it´s perfectly, awfully (and delightfully) BAD taste! No need to mince your words (or your pics) to honnor them! Au contraire!
