Humans don’t have heat cycles, so we don’t have that issue.…and as Greyforest said, removing everything reduces the chance of ovarian cancer or uterine infections later on in life. Actually, since the ovaries and uterus are completely removed, it eliminates any chance of cancer of those organs. It also reduces the chance of breast cancer… and yes, dogs and cats can get breast cancer just as well as humans.
There was a column in the St. Louis Post-Diispatch by Dr. Michael Fox, the vet, about this subject. He said it’s better to prevent pregnancies by using a vasectomy or a tubal rather than neutering of spaying. It doesn’t upset the hormones and is healthier. However, I don’t think many, if any, vets would do this.

Yes, a spay is a total hysterectomy and it will reduce the chance of ovarian cancer or uterine infections later on in life.
