Historically, the “bar sinister” (the diagonal stripe running up over the left shoulder, as in the rightmost stormtrooper in the first panel) was said to connote an illegitimate birth, while the belt going up the other way indicated legitimate origins. This supposedly comes from heraldry and the stripes/batons depicted on the coat of arms.
This interpretation does pose some difficulties for stormtroopers, since I thought they were all clones of a single individual.
Maybe to speed stormtrooper creation, they created two editions of the first clones – a male and a female, with the left shoulder belt clones (the sinister ones, of course) being female and the right shoulder clones being male. The benefit of this is that you’ll get some free clones over time. The drawback to this is that there is a very slight chance that future generations of these in-bred clones could be stupid and/or have poor aim.
