Obama has made a start, but the real prize is lifting the embargos. The continuance of embargos defies the U.N. Charter and International law, and are themselves a serious violation of human rights. Lifting the embargos will require congressional approval, but since power, control, and votes are at stake, don’t look for a quick resolution. The U.S. should stop trying to bend other nations to their will and allow Cuba to become the jewel of the Caribbean it could be.
In actuality, this will give the US far more genuine good will throughout South America as Cuba still influences a great deal of such good will in that continent. This actually enhances the security of the US itself, and is therefore a good thing for president Obama to do.
However, as I have posted before here, president Obama could come up with great governmental support for such traditional American values as apple pie and motherhood and the tea party types of ultra conservatives would then be against motherhood as some kind of liberal ploy, and apple pie as some kind of downright Communist plot against the good old freedoms of the USA. Boy, are these types ever predictable!!
As Dr. A. W. Tower once said, “The blessing of God is promised to peacemakers. The religious negotiator, however, better watch his step.”This is not reconciliation between American and Cuba. This is a political deal between a weak corrupt U.S. lame duck and a clever dictator.
" The wealthier people already go there now, just in a roundabout way (generally through Canada)."I always thought they were going through Mexico to get to Cuba.
Letting the dog back in when he’s out in the snow isn’t misletoe or a marriage, just some decency.
Which, Batista and the mobs from NY and Miami were far more brutal than Fidel, and yes, that is saying something. In those glory days however, al the bad stuff was out of sight, and out of mind, for Americans recreating in Havana. Carmen Miranda was NOT representative of what was happening to the people of Cuba.
The U.S. has turned a blind eye to past crimes before. Resumption of relations with Cuba are worth talking about. Perhaps once the Cuban populace begins to improve their standard of living, they may pester their government for loosening other restrictions. At least, I hope this would happen.

Whenever someone acts as a peacemaker, others will find fault and weakness. Some believe that strength can only be achieved through belligerence.
We had a name for people like that in high school: bullies.
