We found out the hard way that very often the credit card machine (not the ones you swipe yourself) tells the clerk to call the company for confirmation. They don’t want to be bothered, so they tell the customer that it is declined.
I had to speak with American Express just once during a purchase. They asked me when I last ate and if I had something alcoholic with my meal. I am quite sure they wanted to make sure I was playing with a full deck..You see, I was buying a car and told the dealer if they wanted the sale, they would need to put the entire amount on “the card”. I was approved and I drove the car home that evening…

We had that happen one time when we were traveling. It was a charge out of our state. Now we call the company when we travel.
