I think the next step should be an opt-in national insurance.

Universal healthcare is needed to provide for all and to assure that all able are contributing to the pool.

Why is it that America fails to learn from the rest of the world? Everyone that could afford it came to America for health care because the same level of care was not available in their country. I speak from experience while my ex wife was going thru cancer treatment at MD Anderson in Houston 1 out of every 3 was from a foreign country and they all came because the government run medical systems in their countries would not give them the same level of treatment they would receive in the old US health care system.

“Something I don’t get about Democrats is the “free, free, free everyone else pays for me”mentality..”

Perhaps it’s because it doesn’t exist, except in the minds of people who want to create antagonism.

I’m betting that you don’t wake up every morning wondering how to close abortion clinics and how to make sure poor children don’t eat. Am I right?

Talk to real people; you might find that we are all more alike than the antagonizers want you to think. Enmity sells, and there are a lot of people who want to buy. Please re-evaltuate; we don’t need more buyers on either side of any issue.

If I call my doctor in the morning I can see her in the afternoon. Fortunately I’ve never had a serious illness, but a friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer of the throat and was operated on the next day. I can go on and on with examples — because I live in Canada and have first-hand experience — but somehow the facts never seem to make a difference to those who want to believe otherwise.

You make a lot of assumptions. First off, I challenge your 72%. Please provide a credible source. Second, you assume that African-American unwed mothers vote. (Remember that more than 50% of the citizens eligible to vote do not do so. So the majority “party” is “I don’t give a damn.”) You assume that these unwed mothers research which candidates will vote their interest. You assume they choose Democrats. All of these assumptions will be correct for some. But it’s a stretch to imagine all those being correct for everyone.

And my original point rings true: there are certainly supporters of both parties that live the stereotype. But there are a large number of people who do not, and they are the only hope for our future. Die-hard hard-headed idealogues will never compromise or even see the other side. The people willing to see more than one side of an issue are our future, and believing that those people do not exist and assuming that everyone on the other side is your mortal enemy is a recipe for disaster. You strike me as being smarter than that. But you’re free to prove me wrong.

I know people who live there, too — for instance, me. And my wife. And my wife’s sister and her family, and my friends, and my colleagues at work. Hundreds of people. Probably a half dozen MDs among them. And I have never heard any of them wish to change the Canadian system for the US system.

My daughter moved to New Zealand, where folks there complain about taxes too. Now, looking at out of pocket expenses for prenatal, delivery, and post-natal out of pocket costs for a baby, that zero in New Zealand isn’t such a bad deal. And yes, the system does pay for itself. Those taxes don’t equal “free” health care, which is the misnomer the right keeps hollering about, but hey, they don’t want ANY taxes either!!

Except they do. England has a single payer government run health care system & it’s unsustainable! They have a huge shortage of doctors & hospital beds & a huge waiting list for surgeries. This liberal notion of everything for free just blows my mind. Where exactly do you think the money comes from to pay for things?? The stub hub ticket tree’s cousin, the money tree??

Do we really have to go through this again and again and again? The stats are clear — the US spends more per person for outcomes that are overall no better than the outcomes of the other developed countries.
