My dad was a farmer at the time, he got a deferment to keep producing food. My brother served in 1965 – 1966, thanks to the draft, he was never shipped overseas. But he did join the Guard afterwards and was a member until about a decade ago.
I always keep track of how many strips observe a holiday when it comes about. As you might guess, Christmas and Hallowe’en usually get the most strips. Today, of the over 50 strips I follow in my newspaper and offline, only seven dealt with Veteran’s Day. (No, I don’t count the strips doing repeats, unless the repeat is also about the holiday.)
I liked today’s “Working Daze” “Maria’s World,” “Wizard of ID” and “BC.” But I think my favorite so far today would be this reminder that it isn’t only humans who served:
A lot of us non combat vets feel like it was no big deal because we just did the little stuff. I joined the army during ’Nam and got sent to Alaska. My better half set me straight yesterday. Even non-combat vets signed a blank check and gave their time supporting their brothers in arms and their country. It all counts. Thanks to my lady for her support of me when I get depressed, “because I did nothing”.
My dad joined at 17 and served with the German Occupation forces in 47 for several years, came back, met my mom, got married, had 2 kids, went to Korea and Vietnam. Retired just before he was to go back to ’Nam for a second tour. He died this past March. Thanks, Dad (Sgt. 1st Class, US Army, Ret.)
