Wasn’t quartering people one of the causes of the American Revolution?

The officer was obviously a liberal art student doing an internship.

Quartered: meaning you are in the living space. Captain Kirk would say “I’ll be in my quarters if you need me.”

In my book they tied each arm and leg to a horse and then said … HEE YAH!

@ Granny Grump – exactly. Being “drawn” was equally gruesome. Our Constitutional prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment was inspired by the public torture-execution of French unfortunate Robert Damiens, who was quartered after hours of torture in private and in public.

Drawn and quartered initially referred to steps in processing an animal — disembowelled and cut into 4 parts. Doing the same to a criminal or enemy was not torture, since the person was already dead, but adding levels of indignity to the process, and in some interpretations, meant to preclude the possibility of the victim enjoying the resurrection. Sometimes, a couple more steps were added — burning and casting the ashes into sea, or other convenient body of water.
