Back in the day my aunt and her family took their Christmas card photos with a 35mm camera set with a timer, and one kid made a face in EVERY single picture on the roll. Of course back then you didn’t know until you got the pictures back. She made him pay for the replacement film out of his allowance.
When my mum was at school (sometime between WW I and WW II) they all assembled annually for the class photograph. Everyone had to stand without moving while the camera panned from one side of the group to the other. The trick was to stand at the starting side and, as the camera started panning. run behind the group and appear in the photo for a second time at the other end.
@Hobbes, I see from the July 1952 Peanuts strip that Lucy was a crabby complainer from the beginning, but Charlie Brown’s character got changed from mischief-maker to lovable loser, and Patty went from girl-next-door to tomboy and also got an appearance change to her “mousy-blah” hair and freckles. Such interesting history. Keep ’em coming. :)
My younger son was a very active child and it was difficult to get a picture of him. So what I would do is focus on a particular spot in the room and wait for him to run into the frame.
Love it. Calvin is psychically connected to his father, so he knows that every time Dad says “click” it’s going to be a fake, and he can tell when Dad is actually going to snap the shutter. His portrait faces are legendary.
Kids seem to be of two schools of thought about photos. Either they love having theirs taken and pose gladly, or they hate it and make every effort to bomb their own photo.

When Dad tries to take Calvin’s picture using a film camera, he never knows what will develop.

I always hated getting my picture taken and would do anything to deter it from happening.

In the fourth Peanuts strip that I posted above, notice that Snoopy says, “Shh!” A rare moment.

My son ALWAYS evades a camera. Uncanny.

@Number Six: Heh heh. When I posted that out-of-focus Pearls strip, I actually wondered whether it might cause resolution confusion.

How do kids DO that?
