While my local Post Office does quite a good job, it is small and under corporate rules will be facing the knife. It is also worth noting the Postal Service nose-dive is in part due to the internet, but MORE the fact the Republicans made it a “corporate entity” on its own.

While UPS and FedEx are still doing okay- where is DHL? BTW they do NOT have to deliver cut-rate “junk” mail, like BANK SOLICITATION LETTERS that DO NOT PAY 1st class rates to travel as first class mail.

They do need to update, like getting rid of most of the discount rates that mostly benefit big corporations. Want to guess whether a first class ounce costs more than a catalogue to mail?

The Pony Express lasted only one year.

The Post Office must be doing something better, none of their employees have gone “postal” lately.

I am very happy with my post office, considering all of the junk they have to deliver, and their budget problems I think they do a good job.

I also believe the GOP would kill the Postal Service, except the “professionals” like FedEx and UPS don’t want to carry all of the junk mail – there is no profit in it, which is why the Postal Services loses money.

I’ve signed up to a no “junkmail” list and refused to accept Royalmail’s own junkmail service called “direct mail”. When our postman pleaded with me to accept it as their livelyhood depended on it, I said I already supported Royalmail by sending back empty postage prepaid envelopes from companies that have made it past my “no junkmail” or are from companies I have services with but often send me “offers” I don’t care about.

What I liked about the US postal service was the fact the postman picks up your mail from your doorstep. While over there on one my trips someone explained to me what the little flag on your mailboxes meant. Quite cool, any other countries do that? But perhaps they might make a few savings if you guys actually walked to a centralised postbox and posted your letters yourself? Or would we benefit from a similar collection strategy and make cost savings that way?
