Black dog has been marking the cards. Big white dog is consulting Hoyle to find a fitting punishment.

Once again, so far, no work, by this artist, has appeared in Mr. Melcher’s blog (the first link will list them, if that changes). A slightly-different-coloration, somewhat enlarged image, can be found here.Trial by Jury or Laying down the Law (link shows painting’s Wikipedia page) is shown, with a different coloration image, and described, by its current-location page.Currently, a larger, this coloration, detail image (may have changed, since I wrote this) can be found on another current-location page. It is further described by this archived current-location page which says

… The poodle may represent Lord Lyndhurst, the Lord Chancellor, who here presides as judge. Other lawyers, court officials and jurors are represented by a variety of breeds of dogs. Landseer included the 6th Duke’s own pet Blenheim spaniel ‘Bony’ in 1842 as a ‘cub-reporter’ to the left of the judge’s chair.Landseer began his career specialising in dogs and in this picture achieved a masterly tour de force. He appears to have started the painting after an eminent judge had remarked that the French poodle belonging to the artist’s friend Count d’Orsay “would make a capital Lord Chancellor”. …The artist’s Wikipedia page and collection (more under Subcategories).
