(Also taking a look at the Articles of Confederation and The ANTI-Federalist Papers, helps. It’s kinda scary just HOW frequently the predictions about “Liberty Yeilding” and “Tyranny growing” have been realized as time went on.)
I always voted at my Party’s call and never thought of thinking for myself at all………Gilbert & Sullivan’s “When I was a lad”. Obviously nothing much has changed since the 1900’s.
Never vote for the Party, vote for the person. There is too thin a line in the middle between party and the ones on the extremes are harmful to the population.
You are aware that the TEA Party isn’t actually a party, right? It is a loose affiliation of conservative and/or libertarian grass roots groups reputed to all be organized by collective concerns, like existing community organizations before them.
Read Mark Twain’s autobiography, and you’ll find that things haven’t changed much at all. Partisan politics has always been this bad. He tells the tale of a group of associates who were backing a candidate whom they all though was unfit for office. Twain refused; he would remain independent and vote for the right person for the job. As for the others, they had no choice- somehow an incompetent got the nomination, and now he was the party’s candidate. They would support him.-——————————————————Twain does convince a local minister to vote his conscience, and support the opposing candidate as the better qualified- and the minister’s congregation begins to abandon him and boycott the church. They all belonged to the same party. It brings to mind the saying “He may be a fool, but he’s OUR fool.”
It goes back before that, In reading a bio of Merriwether Lewis (of ‘and Clark’ fame) I found accounts from Jefferson’s era of smear tactics and fake scandals that would do FOX News proud.
My favorite part about people who mock the Tea Party is that if they undestood – many of them would agree with their ideals – even if not their methods.
A guiding principle I’ve found useful over the last few Decades, “When in Doubt, Vote ’em OUT!”Newbies Don’t yet know where all the “Levers of Power” are yet and are thus restrained in the Damage they can do.
No, the Tea Party is the Republican party itself. We just want BOTH PARTIES to cut the D@MN SPENDING they do. Look how Republicans took care of a TEA Party candidate in Mississippi a few weeks ago in a recent MS primary. Tea Party is the Republican Party! Give me a break!! Maybe this country should have more than 100 political parties like Italy does.
