Wally: What if your mom decided NOT to come home one day?
Joan: Oh, that'll never happen.
Joan: She likes her little jaunts, but she needs her home base.
Wally: Her LITTLE JAUNTS are getting longer...
MEANWHILE
MAGISTRATE
And now they’re going to be as long as they live… Do you suppose they’ve Actually gotten married by SA’s equivalent of a Judge?! I wonder how Evie’s daughters and grandchildren (especially Alix) are going to react to her finally taking the Big Step with Arnold. Sometimes finding love in one’s later years can be really extra-special… Case in point: later on today (Saturday), we are going to a wedding of two people in their late 50s-early 60s. Its been such a blast watching them be in love…holding hands, etc! I can hardly wait for the ceremony itself…no two people could be as in love as these two (just like every other couple getting married)! Its going to be a blast… ;)
I am not so sure that saying something about “love” is necessary…all you have to do is look into their eyes and that says everything… Besides, they’ve been together long enough to “know” they’re in love with each other. Saying “I love you” is a really neat thing to hear, but two hearts can be lovingly joined together without an actual verbal conversation declaring one’s love with each other. And, as most of us know, the words, “I love you” is used so much to describe so many other things that it no longer has the power it once had… ;)
Not really. Although she’s a world traveler and about as free-spirited as they come, she comes from a generation that didn’t say “I love you” often. If you’ve noticed, she also hasn’t said it much to Alix or Holly, much less her daughters. But, they ALL know she loves them!
There’s no law against having another wedding ceremony when she takes him home. My wife and I have done it a couple times in different contexts for the fun of it.
For the next three days, this strip will be only a test pattern with Muzak in the background. Honeymoon, you know, and it’s a family strip. And much too sophisticated for the cliches of trains running into tunnels, volcanoes erupting, and rockets launching.
I feel we’re seeing the last frames of Evie. She will stay with Arnold and occasionally touch base via the computer, but has had her days from Ms. Jan. That’s what I sense from the characters.
You all have to remember, we don’t hear everything they say to each other. There could have been lots of ‘I love you’s’ in more intimate moments that we don’t see.
I don’t mean to be a complete smartass, but, these are fictional characters that only exist on the four frames a day, that Jan draws for us. They don’t have “intimate moments that we don’t see.”
Thirdguy: the cartoonist can easily refer to things that happened off-stage; thus, the CAN have a life between the frames of the panels. And that would’ve where they’re spending their nights, breakfasts, toilet trips, etc.
Looks like Joan and Val are a little too confident in what they think their mother wants to do with her life. Maybe Evie doesn’t want to be a nanny for the rest of her days. They shouldn’t take having Evie there for granted. Now it looks like Evie will spend her remaining years doing what she and Arnold wants to do. GOOOO EVIE
@BartJ385Firstly, just because it hasn’t been said, doesn’t mean they don’t feel it. My husband didn’t say it when he proposed either, but he’s said it plenty of other times. I haven’t said it to him very often. It’s not me to say that sort of thing out loud and it was very difficult for me to do it the first time. Saying that was, for me, an extremely private and intimate thing to do. He knows I love him. I know he knows it. I find other ways to tell him that don’t use words. These are not words to be squandered needlessly or they will lose their value. So for Evie and Arnold not to say it out loud? I honestly cannot for the life of me see the problem.
Secondly, who are they smiling at, so why smile at all? They are smiling because they just got married. It made them happy. Don’t you ever smile if something makes you happy?
I really don’t know what sort of ‘inconsistency’ you are seeing here.

Val & Joan; meet your new stepfather, Holly, Alix, Max & Luci, meet your new step-grandfather. As for Wally, his new stepfather-oin-law.

Has Evie’s family even met Arnold?.I hope she does take him “home” to get acquainted, and then it spurs Val and Phil to take the plunge!

Jan isn’t cheesy enough to put the I-love-you’s in the strip :Þ

Is that a little veil showing from the back of Evie’s head?

Kind of a shame that Evie didn’t invite the rest of her family.

I hoped that she would say yes. They do love each other, even if they did not say it in so many words.

Heaven forbid the scene of people leaving a church smiling Bart, yep nothing real about that. <~~~ sarcasm

They are both smiling like the Cheshire cat. Also, Evie’s hair has changed from gray with a blue tint to strawberry blonde.
