Although it’s all in cartoon physics, how are they even “speaking” without mouths?

A couple days ago, when this ink shortage started, Mike Peters was mentioned. I didn’t know who Mike Peters was, so I Googled his name and Foxtrot, the search came up with this same comic strip dated August 25, 2003, but in color. Why do we have to see the black and white reruns when there are color versions of the same cartoon in 2003?

Somebody didn’t feel like drawing alot this week. Like having a story in a blackout so all you draw is a pair of eyes. Clever!

This whole story line is kind of sketchy.
