Rat: What do you want for your birthday this year, ma? Rat's Mom: Ohhh, I don't want anything. Rat: Well, I'm gonna get you something, so what do you want? Rat's Mom: You don't have to get me anything. Rat: Please name something. Rat's Mom: Save your money. Rat: Ma, you're gonna end up with a gift you don't like. Rat's Mom: Ohh, I like everything. Rat: Fine. Rat: Happy birthday, ma... It's a cooked-squid-on-roller-skates-clock-radio. Rat's Mom: Oh, son... This is the best birthday ever. Rat: Moms are different.

That particular one is certainly different from her son. Makes me wonder what the father’s like…

Rat has a mother? That shoots down my theory, that he was the result of an Area 41 project gone awry!

If you take out the squid it doesn’t seem like such a bad gift.

Mothers get a lot of practice praising plaques made of a child’s hand in plaster and so on. My son, who is now in his late 40s, made a small table vase when he was 11 and it still has pride of place in my living room. I am so lucky in that every one of my children make me so proud that they have become good husbands, wives, mothers and dads themselves.

I didn’t know there was a competition to be one of the first to comment. Does GoComics give prizes or medals?

My mom-in-law, God rest her soul, was reared to be self effacing. When I’d be dividing up a pie, say, after Sunday dinner, I’d ask her if she’d like a piece or so to take home. She’d always say “no.” One day, after several no’s I just up and wrapped a couple of pieces and gave them to her. She said, “Ooohhh! Is that for MEEE?” Drove me nuts.

I think most moms are like this. I’m guessing Mr. Pastis went through this exact conversation with his mom.

You know the best gift, the really best gift adult offspring can give their moms? Work! Yes! Take care of the dogs for a couple days so Mom can go out of town, or mow the lawn, or pull some weeds, or (if you live at home) clean up the mess you left in the living room and kitchen.

Awwww…At first I thought Rat’s mom was dead, but then I remembered it was his dad that got killed by a clown.

This Sunday 4/6 comic is the most accurate illustration of mothers I’ve ever seen. Just wish my Mom was here to see it with me.

Now that I think of it, a cooked-squid-on-roller-skates-clock-radio would be nice to have.

Give Rat points for trying to be unselfish for a change.
