So the Sunday strip was graduation, after all, and the continuity will extend all week (or at least until we learn just what Bernice and Tiffany have planned). I still wonder why the story skipped over final exams, graduation invitations, parties, and gifts, and all the things that make this such a huge occasion for the kids. After umpteen years at Pitt HS, they should make a bigger deal out of leaving it.

We still haven’t figured out what Bernie is up to yet.^Well, Sherriff was saying yesterday would be in sync with today’s… – BTW, he was worried about the reaction to the color gradient… but I don’t particularly see any problem with it!- But anyway, I noticed Crystal and Tiffany are sort of wearing the same frilly thing- coincidence? Hmmm… Yup! It probably is.. – But I’m sill leaning towards some sort of extra “visual help” in Bern’s presentation….

If you are familiar with Star Trek TNG, the episode “the Nth Degree” comes to mind… a smart, but introverted guy gets struck with an alien tech thingy, and suddenly he becomes the smartest brain on the Enterprise, and he becomes the most confident person in the world… even more than the “Dos Eqques (XX) Guy”… – And of course, in the end, he “naturally cannot” be allowed to remain so brainy and confident, anymore…..

Everybody’s judging Knute by his slackerish appearance. I have no doubt that he’s stunningly intelligent, but simply chooses not to compete on an academic level that doesn’t hold his interest. And I don’t remember that we’ve ever seen his actual grades, so he may be doing well in class to have been in the running for an honors spot while still looking and acting like Maynard G Krebs.

Graduation may last longer than a week. It seemed that way to me. All the speakers were aimed toward the crowd and away from us so we couldn’t hear anything. Blah blah, mumble mumble mumble. Somebody says – “Wonder if we clap they will sit down?” somebody had a card game going. Couple of comic cooks being read.

It definitely feels like a lot of Senior moments have been missed. I think it’s a matter of bad pacing because there is no lack of material to cover the last months of high school. Should have had a shorter more precise prom story arc, and some final exam pressure strips would’ve been nice.

    > Few would wish to see each student take each final, open each gift, write and send each announcement.Nor would it advance the story line.>Obviously, we don’t need to see each student doing those things multiple times. However, if the strip purports to be a portrayal of actual high school life, we do need to see the title character going through the overall process of those things. Worrying about finals is a huge part of high school – other strips featuring teenagers make a big deal about it. Here, it was not even mentioned, making one wonder whether these people even took any exams. Preparing for the actual graduation by planning who to invite, and seeing what gifts you are sent, and attending graduation-related gatherings of family and friends takes a great deal more of a senior’s time than does the actual ceremony itself. However, the strip went straight from “Luann demands more of Quill’s time” to “Luann and Tiffany say good-bye to the kids at Lincoln elementary” to “Phipps wants Bernice to follow in her footsteps” (yet again!) to “Hey, we’re already lined up for graduation.” This is just poor pacing, to leave out so much of what makes a senior year be in fact a senior year. It certainly would advance the story line to show the students getting ready to graduate instead of just going about their lives and then suddenly graduating.

As evidence of how abrupt this was, yesterday many comments posted herein were arguing that the Sunday strip was normally not part of the daily continuity, and surely there would be more daily strips devoted to getting ready for the big day. But nope, it was just Bernice is “chosen” valedictorian mid-week and then Sunday it’s already Pomp and Circumstance time. I wonder whether Frank and Nancy even know about it.

When my son graduated from UC Davis, many graduates put some type of design on the top of their caps so their relatives could find them among all the same color caps and gowns. My son wasn’t one of them, and we found him with no trouble, but I agree with the reason to do so.

By the end of Voyager’s run (he was also a recurring guest there) they developed Barclay a bit more. He had a few girlfriends here and there, and had the ear of his Department head, and was the one who had discovered that Voyager wasn’t missing, but stranded (and with a little help) even got to convince a top Admiral!

The strip was always about the relationships, not the school. IMO Greg will spend a lot of time on the goodbyes as they each go on different paths. I remember the first time (last summer?) Greg wrote a reference to them being “seniors” that he was warning us that he was drawing the strip to a finish. I’ve been reading Luann for so many years that they feel like family almost. If I’m correct, I’ll sure miss them.

Evans wasted time on the “Fo-getty Flashbacks”, having never explored the ‘what high school has meant to me’ essay assignment that proceeded the the weeks of teacher-stupid-student-smart reruns. He truncated the promise of individual arcs leading up to the prom, and milked what he did use to no real conclusion. Now he’s rushing everybody into graduation to play catch-up with real time. In some ways, Knute represents Evans in this strip, and he can’t very well flunk himself out of the ceremony, right?

Knute certainly has underperformed in some strips, but the one thing we do know from the Washington D.C. trip arc is that he has a C average. If he didn’t, he would not have been able to take the trip. So he’s not by any metric the horrific failure as a student that everyone seems to want him to be. Go Knute! And Greg would not let any of his main ensemble characters fall into abject failure after graduation, so I have faith that Knute will find something to do. Eventually. I think he could study comic art or photography, or work at a skate shop. Knute’s a good-hearted, creative guy who got through HS with his cheerfulness intact. I wish him the best.
