Roscoe’s reaction is the same as the Bumstead’s dog.

Winter of 1971, we were in a prefab building with only a woodstove for heat and no indoor plumbing. If you had to go in the middle of the night, you bundled up and walked through the snow to the outhouse. Meanwhile, the cats had a litterbox inside, near but not too near the stove. And when it did fill up, we had to bundle up and walk through the snow to dispose of the old litter..Remind me again how we’re the dominant species on this planet.

    To a dog, you’re God…To a cat, you’re staff.

This past winter reminded me why we have cats and not dogs. When the snow was up to our butts, and the wind was coming straight out of the arctic circle, we only had to go as far as the front porch to dump the cat litter, and while we did we snickered at all the people “communing” with their dogs who were more interested in checking out every single tree in the neighborhood than in getting their business done.
